I decided to make cinnamon rolls yesterday. I have been craving them for a month so I finally got on Skype and got my mom's recipe. How she does it is she makes amazing roll dough in her bread maker and then rolls them out. She rubs butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon on it and then rolls it and cuts it. It makes 12 rolls.
I get out the recipe and follow the directions. After the bread maker beeped I went to get the dough and it looked very flat. That is when I realized that I had forgotten the yeast. I started laughing so hard. There was nothing to do but laugh and throw that batch out. I started a new one. This time I double-checked all the ingredients and made sure I did everything exactly as the recipe said. When the dough was done, the second time, I went to get it and it was beyond sticky. I have never seen my Mom's roll dough come out that way. It was like I hadn't put in enough flour. It was already 9 pm at that point and Greg was going to be home from work soon so I dumped it out and added flour until it felt like the right consistency.
I was about to roll it out for the next step but that is when I realized I don't own a rolling pin. Now it was almost 9:30 pm so I called Greg to pick one up on his way home but he didn't answer. So I went to Plan B which was calling my wonderful neighbor Sunny and she had a rolling pin for me. When I ran over to get it she was in her pj's! I love her so much. Anyways I got it all rolled out and followed the directions and ended up with about 24 rolls instead of 12. The directions say to cut the dough into thirds, then to roll out each third, roll each one up and cut each one into 8 1-inch pieces. That equals 24 so I have no idea how to get 12 out of that.
Anyways, the glaze didn't turn out exactly right but they turned out so good! I was trying to get it to be like my mom's but these tasted just as delicious. The best part though was Greg's reaction to that first bite. It made up for everything that went wrong in the process.
Cinnamon rolls are hard. Mine always come out so weirdly shaped. Too funny about the rolling pin. I've had a moment or two like that myself, realizing you have all the ingredients, it is a piece of hardware that is between you and that goal. Glad you've got a good neighbor to borrow stuff from!
